Mackenzie had raced up the stairs to the door, which led to the common room. It was Friday afternoon. The last classes of the week had just finished. Friday afternoons were the beginning the weekend, every normal student’s favorite part of the week. Friday afternoons also meant the hardest riddles of the week. It was almost the entryway’s way of making the Ravenclaws prove that they had actually learned something all week and earn their right to enjoy the weekend. Mackenzie loved Friday afternoon riddles. It was the ones that really stumped her that she really loved.
But today’s was rather easy. Perhaps the door was still trying to be kind to the firsties. A bit disappointed, the Ravenclaw climbed through the door. Maybe next week’s would be more fun. As she looked up, she noticed that cozy armchairs and numerous wooden tables and chairs were all vacant. When did that ever happen? Someone was always in here, studying or playing wizards chess or maybe even just reading, especially now that it was the weekend. Maybe everyone was still coming back from class. She had probably just walked excessively fast. Yeah, that was it.
Mackenzie’s summer had been wonderful. Family and friends had been in and out the entire time. Almost every afternoon had been spent playing quidditch with her brothers and the other neighborhood kids. They would only stop when they could no longer see the soccer ball that they were using as their quaffle. Sure, she hadn't exactly spent the summer as a devoted Ravenclaw would, but had managed to acquire several dozen books that she hoped to read within the year. A considerable amount of them still lay unread in her bag and trunk. All of her school supplies, that she had shoved into her fading turquoise cloth bag, were beginning to make her shoulder tired, so she walked over to her favorite chair and threw the bag onto it.
Everything from the chair's high back and squashy arm rests to its midnight blue and teal plaid fabric brought a smile to her face. Although she had certainly enjoyed her summer and appreciated being able to spend time with her parents, she had missed school life. She had missed talking to her housemates as she fell asleep in her four poster bed and the excruciatingly detailed yet fulfilling quidditch practices. In an odd way, she had even missed her classes and learning. But most of all, she had missed her friends. It was good to be home.
As she looked around at the still vacant room, she realized that it was getting a bit chilly. The everlasting fire in the fireplace seemed quite inviting. I have to get stronger. she thought to herself as she shoved her chair across the room towards the fireplace. After several minutes of pathetic struggling, she finally managed to situate it between a sky blue sofa and a cherry end table. It would have been much easier to use a simple levitation charm. She had mastered it in her first year. But she was much too stubborn for admitting defeat to an armchair. Smiling, Mackenzie walked around to the front of the chair and plopped into it. She kicked off her shoes and extended her feet towards the dancing fire. Still, no one had made it back from classes, but at least she was warm.
