distinguishing features: He can raise one eyebrow, and has a mole dead center on the back of his neck.
appearance overview:
Lorcan Scamander has the generally outward appearance of a “geek” – lanky with slightly slouched posture, and always carrying a book or two. His black hair is long and falls nearly into his eyes, and has the scruffy “just-rolled-out-of-bed” quality about it. If one were to really take the time and look at Lorcan, they would see that he has bright, inquisitive hazel eyes and a brilliant smile. But ninety-five percent of the time, all that people see are his tousled, too-long hair, too-bushy eyebrows, slight scowl, and eyes that can’t decide what color they want to be. People view him as an “emo kid” trying to stand out but really fading into the background, or an idiotic slob, or just the little black raincloud that lurks in the corner at parties. He’s athletic for a geek, though; 5’9” and still growing, slim with muscle underneath. Since he was seven years old, Lorcan has been a closet Quidditch player. He’s not much into other sports, but Quidditch fascinates him.
Aside from his Hogwarts robes (which he wears proudly with the Ravenclaw symbol always displayed), Lorcan’s style is actually pretty well put together. Admittedly, sometimes he’ll be careless about knotting his tie, or not care about one stain on his cloak, but Lorcan is not a complete good-for-nothing. His attitude is that people should care more about his personality than his physical appearance. Idealistic, perhaps, but there it is.

there's a burning inside of my soul
WE ALL WANT MORE THAN JUST A SIMPLE LIFE
WE ALL WANT MORE THAN JUST A SIMPLE LIFE
likes: reading, animals, history, learning, writing
dislikes: dark magic, arrogance, ignorance, selfishness, seeing pain
strengths: open-minded, realistic, considerate, slow-burning fuse
weaknesses: shyness, not outwardly expressive, blue eyes, baby animals
skills: being virtually invisible, playing violin
goals: to break out of his family’s “weird” stereotype and make something of himself
fears: being stuck with the “weird” label like his mum, the Dark Lord rising again
patronus: a snow leopard; they are elusive creatures and Lorcan tends to stay out of the spotlight as best he can
personality overview:
Despite his potential “weirdness”, Lorcan, like his mum, is in Ravenclaw for a reason. He’s a smart kid – but more so bookworm-smart than anything else. He reads all the time. And about anything. History, different cultures, animals, biographies – so it’s easy to understand, then, that Lorcan’s favorite place in Hogwarts, is the extensive library. He’s convinced that nearly everything he could ever want to know is in there somewhere; you just have to know where to look. He gets teased for being a know-it-all when he corrects people, but Lorcan obviously comes by this trait honestly. He doesn’t criticize in a snappy manner, as in “What could possibly make you think that, you’re so wrong,” but gently, often beginning with an uncertain tone and “I think it’s like this, actually…” Lorcan hates making others feel bad. He can’t stand seeing pain in any form. A lot of people may call this being a pansy, but Lorcan’s just sensitive to the emotions of others.
So with this combination of disliking confrontation and hurting peoples’ feelings, Lorcan has discovered that it’s best to just stay out of the way. And he’s good at that too. He can walk down a corridor and be content with a simple nod to the people he knows – then he’s basically invisible to anyone he doesn’t know, as he doesn’t make a scene when he sees someone. He’s not always very expressive of his own feelings, but that changes depending on the person (or people) he’s around. Lorcan expresses himself through art usually – he plays the violin brilliantly, and dashes off song lyrics here and there. Often he writes about things that really happen in his life or are specifically important to him. Lorcan never understood the idea of writing about something you didn’t understand. His favorite topics are his pets, and his family. One song, “Gothica”, is based on watching his cat running through a rainstorm, but it sounds like it could be about a girl as well.
Even though he may come across as a complete introvert who’s stuck on his pets, Lorcan loves girls, like any other guy. He matured a bit more quickly than his brother, perhaps, and began to appreciate women by the time he was eleven and first attending Hogwarts. In Lorcan’s mind, he doesn’t see anything that’s not to like about girls. They’re sensitive and considerate, and a lot more open to talking about the way they feel than other guys, and on top of it they’re pretty too.

history:
Lorcan’s birth was probably the most normal thing about his family life. He was born at the small medical center in Ottery St. Catchpole late on the evening of January 24. His name comes from the Irish Lorcan meaning “little fierce one” and the English Jasper, traditionally known as a name for one of the Magi, or “wise men” in Christianity. He and his twin brother Lysander grew up outside the village with their naturalist parents. There was so much to do around the house all the time, between taking care of all of their pets and trying to keep some semblance of order in the place, that for awhile Lorcan couldn’t imagine anything else. His parents talked about their school days of course, vaguely mentioning how they hoped the boys would find it to their own liking. Lorcan mostly befriended Muggles as a child, but the Scamanders also became decent friends with the Weasley family. His mum had known the Weasleys when she was in school – as she put it, “who didn’t?” – and Lorcan was mesmerized with some of the stories that came out of that family. Lorcan and his brother never had to worry about the level of fame that the Weasley and Potter children did, although their parents were famous in their own right for the changes they had made as naturalists.
One note that stood out to Lorcan by the time he was seven or eight was how his magical friends seemed to always talk about Hogwarts and what house they would be Sorted into. He was excited about school too, when he sat down and thought about it, but with several different species of magical animals running about the place that needed his attention, he couldn’t say he honestly put a lot of thought into stressing over House placement. He figured if it were really important, his parents would have mentioned something about it. They never brought the subject up though, so until he received his Hogwarts letter Lorcan didn’t think twice about it. In honor of the occasion, his parents bought both boys an owl (as if they didn’t have enough pets already) and saw them off on the train. It was the start of an interesting school career.
It was evident from his first year that Lorcan was an avid learner. He sucked up anything the professors said and had no problem remembering it. His favorite subjects, almost instantly, were Care of Magical Creatures and Transfiguration. Lorcan adored the hands-on experience presented by CoMC, but he also recognized the importance of wandwork and thus fell in love with classes like Transfiguration and Charms. He didn’t dislike Defense Against the Dark Arts (primarily because it was a defense class), but had it been a Dark Arts class or even a History of the Dark Arts class, Lorcan would have despised it immediately. From a young age he has always made sure to keep up-to-date on the Dark Arts, and has hated them with a passion. He still doesn’t trust the position of DADA teacher, as it was so heavily “jinxed” in the past, and remains cautious of anyone willing to display Dark magic in front of him.

roleplay sample:
[from a site I RP’d on a year or so ago, as Alex Fletcher:]
As it happened, Alex wasn't out scavenging for more potions ingredients today. Nor was he drowning his sorrows in a drink at the Three Broomsticks -- not that he would ever go there of course, the Hog's Head was much more to his taste. Alex preferred osbcurity whenever possible in a situation like that. And it was too early to be down traipsing about the dungeon corridors with Blake -- that always seemed to happen late in the middle of the night when he was suffering insomnia again and again.
Today found Alex kicked back in his chair, polished black shoes on the desk, researching. Investigating and collecting different ideas from other potion-makers was something of a hobby, because Alex enjoyed (as much as he could) inventing his own solutions from time to time. He'd discovered on moving into the potion master's headquarters that it was ideally suited for such work, and was glad of it.
He was perusing a copy of Hogwarts, A History -- Volume II (which was even larger than the first installment), when there was a loud and rapid pounding on the door. He rolled his eyes but didn't get up, instead finishing the paragraph he was on and letting the person bang for awhile longer. If whomever it was could afford to be so obnoxious, he could afford to take his good old time in answering them.
With a sigh, Alex tossed the book onto his desk with a thud and raised his wand. The door swung open to reveal none other than Belle Beaumont, his latest nemesis.
“Package for you, Deputy Headmaster.”
He raised an eyebrow. Since when had she decided to be nice and bring him something? And in person too...
"Well, I must say this is a surprise," he replied, remaining where he was. "Come in." He didn't catch her undertone murmuring, but shrugged it off. Probably some stupid quip about how she despised him.
"I didn't know we'd taken to using other staff members instead of owls," he said with a smirk, watching her. His blue eyes stormed with a slight hint of amusement, as she obviously didn't want to be there. Come to that, he didn't much want her there either, but she was anyway.
